Activity DRAG Analysis: Optimisation conditions

Activity Drag is a network analysis metric that identify activities directly impacting overall project duration. Essentially, it quantifies how many days the total project duration could be reduced if a particular activity’s duration were shortened.
However, seizing this opportunity requires satisfying additional conditions – two of which are apparent and one that is less obvious.
Apparent Conditions
- Technological Feasibility: it must be possible, from a technological standpoint, to reduce an activity’s duration through changes in resource allocation. This might involve adding more resources, assigning resources with higher productivity, or increasing working hours.
- Resource Availability: Extra resources must actually be available to make those changes possible.
Less Obvious Condition
Accelerating an activity alters the resource demand profiles for other project resources that are not directly assigned to the activity in question. If these secondary resources are limited, available only during specific timeframes, or were already balanced in terms of supply and demand prior to the change, then the anticipated acceleration might not be achieved. In other words, we merely shift the bottleneck from one part of the network to another, leaving the overall duration unchanged.
In summary, while the Activity Drag metric reveals potential opportunities for acceleration, it does not account for these additional factors. Ignoring them can create a false sense of potential improvement.
This metric should therefore be applied within project resource-driven delivery models rather than progress tracking schedules. Each identified Activity Drag opportunity must be tested against reality, considering the above factors.
